An event oganized in our conference hall to draw attention to the vital importance of water and to raise awareness for the protection of water resources within the scope of World Water Day.

As part of the event, Department of Biosystems Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Sultan Kıymaz  presentated "Water Efficiency in Agriculture". The presentation discussed the status of Türkiye's water resources and what needs to be done for the effective and sustainable use of water in agricultural production.

The Importance of Water Resources and Türkiye’s Water Situation

Prof. Dr. Sultan Kıymaz stated that Türkiye is among the countries experiencing water stress, and that the annual amount of water per person is 1,323 m³ and that this amount could drop to 1,000 m³ by 2030. He drew attention to the fact that serious water shortages could be experienced in regions such as Thrace, Central Anatolia and Western Anatolia due to increasing population and climate change.

Efficiency Needs to Be Increased in Agricultural Irrigation

Emphasizing that the agricultural sector accounts for a large portion of the country’s total water use, Kıymaz listed the measures that need to be taken for more efficient use of water in agricultural irrigation:

✅ Dissemination of pressurized irrigation systems
✅ Use of automation and remote sensing systems
✅ Encouraging rainwater harvesting
✅ Reuse of treated wastewater in irrigation
✅ Adoption of good agricultural practices, ecological agriculture, vertical farming, controlled irrigation methods such as mulching and fertigation

The World Water Day event reminded us of the indispensable role of water in our lives and gave important messages about the need to increase water efficiency in agricultural production. The event ended with a group photo and the presentation of a certificate of appreciation.
